Final Paper Research

I have been collecting literature on the subject of bullying and peer abuse, as I prepare to write my final paper for EDUC391X. This is related to my work for Digital Artifacts 1&2, where I focused on the same topic. It’s really interesting to read about some of the research studies that have been conducted on the subject—how they designed their experiments and formulated their findings. In one study, Anne-Marie Ambert uses “observations” consisting almost solely of her readings of her…See More

ViewXtreme, GreatSchools, Artifact 2

Once again, our web-based teaching technologies class session this past week was chock-full of stimulating presentations and discourse. We spent time on three main topics: ViewXtreme web-based learning application, a guest-presenter's initial ideas for a school-comparison web resource, and check-in regarding our quickly-approaching "Artifact 2" presentations.ViewXtremeTwo Stanford alumni, one of whom is an engineer and the other an MBA, visited us to overview (and collect heuristic feedback…See More

Multi-modal learning; Anti-bullying school cultures

During our last EDUC391 class session, Dr. Kim talked about dual coding, a cognitive learning theory that argues for learning new ideas both verbally AND visually, but separately. The idea is that our brains encode visual information along different channels than verbal information. Thus, if we learn something first verbally, and then again visually, or vice versa, we have put that lesson in two important channels of the brain. However, if we are presented with both the verbal AND the visual at…See More

Thoughts on Edison Learning and the virtual classroom

In developing my own opinion on Edison Learning, and the virtual classroom in general, I go back to my work as a teacher. I saw all kinds of personalities and styles of learning in my own experience, and I often had to be involved in counseling families to find the right school for their child, if my school was not it. This is a crucial idea in education: to work for a “match” between the school and the student. What works for some students may not work for others. I even think back to my own…See More

Artifact 1 Presentations

In our most recent 391X class session, my classmates and I each presented our “Digital Artifact 1” project. These came in an array of formats (movies, podcasts, slide presentations, weblogs, etc.) and topics (childhood depression, ADD, homelessness, street children in East Africa, the Israeli/Palestinian conflict…). The purpose of the project was to identify an educational and/or social problem, then research what has been done vis-à-vis technology, to help combat that problem. What struck me…See More

Integrating Technology into Teaching Students to Think Critically

In one of my previous entries, I mentioned one of my courses this quarter: CS448B--Data Visualization. I've found that class to be highly stimulating, and also quite challenging. My background is in education--I've been a 5th grade classroom teacher for six years. While I am technologically savvy, I don't have much formal training in computer science, and as a result, I'm having to hustle a bit extra to meet the demands of the Data Visualization course. And I'm loving it.More important than the…See More

Concept Maps

We had such stimulating discourse in our Web-based Technologies in Teaching course this past week! We talked much about how to use technology to even the playing field of education and expression, by bringing access to those who hadn't before held it. With the shrinking-world phenomenon modern technology has brought about, we can give a very real and wide audience to people (especially children!) in developing parts of the world, with an aim to boost their…See More

A week into grad school

A week into Stanford's Learning, Design & Technology (LDT) Master's program, I couldn't be more impressed with or excited about school. In my EDUC391 class (web-based technologies in teaching), we’re going to investigate social issues (e.g., AIDS, poverty, hunger…). We’ll conduct research about the state of such issues and what’s already been done in the educational-technology realm to address them. I really appreciate getting to choose topics we're passionate about and (digital-based)…See More

teaching beyond design

I think it would be great if more schools would integrate instruction on increasing Landing Page Optimization for marketing Web sites. One Indianapolis Web Design company is taking the time to teach students the ins and outs of not only producing a Web site, but also getting it indexed well. Many design… Continue
